Introduction<\/h4>\n

\u201dAnd you may ask yourself, \u2019Well, how did I get here?\u2019\u201d – Talking Heads (Once in a Lifetime)<\/p>\n

This is my little \u201dLinux and Bash<\/a> in 10 steps\u201d guide. It\u2019s based on what I consider the essentials for floundering around acting like I know what I\u2019m doing in Linux, BSD<\/a> and \u201dUNIX-flavored<\/a>\u201d systems and looking impressive among people who have only worked on Windows in the GUI. Your \u201d10 steps\u201d may be different than mine and that\u2019s fine, but this list is mine.<\/p>\n

I said ten things, but I lied, because history is really important, so we will start at step #0. And since this is before even that I guess that means this is a 12-step program…<\/p>\n

Here is what we\u2019ll cover in the rest of this book:<\/p>\n

  1. Some History \u2013 UNIX<\/a> vs. BSD, System V vs. BSD, Linux vs. BSD, POSIX, \u201cUNIXlike,\u201d Cygwin, and why any of this matters now, \u201cWhy does this script off the internet work on this system and not on that one?\u201d<\/li>\n
  2. Come Out of Your Shell \u2013 sh vs. ash vs. bash vs. everything else, \u201dREPL\u201d, interactive vs. scripts, command history, tab expansion, environment variables and \u201dA path! A path!\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. File Under \u201dDirectories\u201d \u2013 ls, mv, cp, rm (-rf *), cat, chmod\/chgrp\/chown and everyone\u2019s favorite, touch.<\/li>\n
  4. Finding Meaning \u2013 the find command in all its glory. Probably the single most useful command in \u201dUNIX\u201d (I think).<\/li>\n
  5. Grokking grep \u2013 and probably gawking at awk while we are at it, which means regular expressions, too. Now we have two problems.<\/li>\n
  6. \u201cJust a Series of Pipes\u201d \u2013 stdin\/stdout\/stderr, redirects, piping between commands.<\/li>\n
  7. vi (had to be #6, if you think about it) \u2013 how to stay sane for 10 minutes in vi. Navigation, basic editing, find, change\/change-all, cut and paste, undo, saving and canceling. Plus easier alternatives like nano, and why vi still matters.<\/li>\n
  8. The Whole Wide World \u2013 curl, wget, ifconfig, ping, ssh, telnet, \/etc\/hosts and email before Outlook.<\/li>\n
  9. The Man Behind the Curtain – \/proc, \/dev, ps, \/var\/log, \/tmp and other things under the covers.<\/li>\n
  10. How Do You Know What You Don\u2019t Know, man? \u2013 man, info, apropos, Linux Documentation Project, Debian and Arch guides, StackOverflow and the dangers of searching for \u201cman find\u201d or \u201cman touch\u201d on the internet.<\/li>\n
  11. And So On – \/etc, starting and stopping services, apt-get\/rpm\/yum, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Plus some stuff at the end to tie the whole room together.<\/p>\n
