GraphQL\u00a0is an open-source data\u00a0query<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0manipulation<\/a>\u00a0language for\u00a0APIs<\/a>, and a query runtime engine. Facebook<\/a>\u00a0(now Meta) started GraphQL development in 2012 and released it in 2015.<\/sup> GraphQL was moved on 7 November 2018 to the newly established GraphQL Foundation, hosted by the non-profit\u00a0Linux Foundation<\/a>.<\/sup><\/p>\n

GraphQL provides a web API approach in which clients define the structure of the data to be returned by the server. This can impede\u00a0web caching\u00a0of query results. GraphQL does not provide a full-fledged\u00a0graph queries language such as\u00a0SPARQL, or even dialects of SQL\u00a0that support\u00a0transitive closure. For example, a GraphQL interface that reports the parents of an individual cannot return, in a single query, the set of all their ancestors.<\/p>\n

GraphQL consists of a type system, query language and execution semantics, static validation, and\u00a0type introspection. It supports reading, writing (mutating), and subscribing to changes to data (real-time updates \u2013 most commonly implemented using Websockets). GraphQL servers are available in multiple languages. The result of a single query is returned in JSON\u00a0format.<\/p>\n

On 9 February 2018, the GraphQL Schema Definition Language (SDL)<\/a> became part of the specification.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
