Cancer is the second leading <\/span>cause of death worldwide. <\/span>Together, we will change that.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

While we live in a time of awe-<\/span>inspiring advancements in cancer <\/a><\/span>prevention, diagnosis and treatment, <\/span>many of us who seek cancer care <\/span>hit barriers at every turn. Income, <\/span>education, geographical location and <\/span>discrimination based on ethnicity, <\/span>gender, sexual orientation, age, <\/span>disability and lifestyle are just a few <\/span>of the factors that can negatively <\/span>affect care.<\/span><\/p>\n

So this year\u2019s World Cancer Day\u2019s theme, <\/span>\u201cClose the Care Gap\u201d, is all about raising <\/span>awareness of this equity gap that affects <\/span>almost everyone, in high as well as low- <\/span>and middle-income countries, and is <\/span>costing lives. <\/span>Join us on 4 February to speak out and <\/span>stand up for a world less burdened by <\/span>cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Campaign Theme 2022-2024 <\/span><\/h3>\n

Whoever you are, you have the power <\/span>to reduce the impact of cancer for <\/span>yourself, the people you love and for <\/span>the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first year of the \u2018Close the <\/a><\/span>Care Gap\u2019 campaign is all about <\/span>understanding and recognizing the <\/span>inequities in cancer care around the <\/span>globe. It\u2019s about having an open mind, <\/span>challenging assumptions and looking <\/span>at the hard facts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only when we learn and understand, <\/span>can we take action and make <\/span>progress. <\/span>It\u2019s time to close the care gap.<\/span><\/p>\n

What do we mean by \u201cinequity\u201d?<\/span><\/h3>\n

In healthcare, inequality refers to the uneven distribution <\/span>of resources. By contrast, inequity means unjust, avoidable <\/span>differences in care or outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The difference may seem subtle, but closing the cancer <\/span>care gap isn\u2019t really about simply providing everyone <\/span>with equal resources. One size doesn\u2019t fit all, and every <\/span>challenge demands a different solution. Equity is about <\/span>giving everyone what they need to bring them up to the <\/span>same level.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where you live. Who you are. Where you come from. What you do. <\/span>Who you love. These are called the social determinants of health, <\/span>and they represent the many factors that may lead to inequities. <\/span>They can unfairly stand between you and cancer prevention, <\/span>diagnosis and treatment. <\/span><\/p>\n

  • 10 million people each year <\/span>die from cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • 70% of cancer deaths occur in <\/span>low-to-middle income countries.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Less than 30% of low-income <\/span>countries have cancer treatment <\/span>services available (compared to 90% in high-income countries).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • For white women in the US, the five-year survival <\/span>rate for cervical cancer is 71%. For black women, <\/span>the rate is just 58%.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • In New Zealand, M\u0101ori are twice as likely to die from cancer as <\/span>non-M\u0101ori.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Cancer kills nearly 10 million people a year and some 70% of those <\/span>are aged 65 or older, yet older populations face disproportionate <\/span>barriers to effective treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • In refugee populations, cancer is more likely to be diagnosed at an <\/span>advanced stage, leading to worse outcomes.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Up to 3.7 million lives could be saved each year through resource <\/span>appropriate strategies for prevention, early detection and timely and quality treatment.
