Social psychology<\/a> is the scientific study of how we feel about, think about, and behave toward the people around us and how our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors are influenced by those people. As this definition suggests, the subject matter of social psychology is very broad and can be found in just about everything that we do every day. Social psychologists<\/a> study why we are often helpful to other people and why we may at other times be unfriendly or aggressive. Social psychologists study both the benefits of having good relationships with other people and the costs of being lonely. Social psychologists study what factors lead people to purchase one product rather than another, how men and women behave differently in social settings, how juries work together to make important group decisions, and what makes some people more likely to recycle and engage in other environmentally friendly behaviors than others. And social psychologists also study more unusual events, such as how some people can be persuaded that a UFO<\/a> is hiding behind a comet, leading them to take their own lives as part of a suicide cult.<\/p>\n

Human beings rely on the three capacities of affect, behavior, and cognition, which work together to help them create successful social interactions.<\/p>\n

You can see that these three aspects directly reflect the idea in our definition of social psychology\u2014the study of the feelings, behaviors, and thoughts of individuals in the social situation. Although we will frequently discuss each of the capacities separately, keep in mind that all three work together to produce human experience. Now let\u2019s consider separately the roles of cognition, affect, and behavior.<\/p>\n

Social Cognition: Thinking and Learning About Others<\/h3>\n

The human brain contains about 100 billion neurons<\/a>, each of which can make contact with tens of thousands of other neurons. The distinguishing brain feature in mammals, including humans, is the more recently evolved cerebral cortex\u2014the part of the brain that is involved in thinking (Figure 1.3). Humans are highly intelligent, and they use cognition in every part of their social lives. Psychologists refer to cognition as the mental activity of processing information and using that information in judgment. Social cognition<\/a> is cognition that relates to social activities and that helps us understand and predict the behavior of ourselves and others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
