This is the first in what I hope will be a long series of books about African animal tales. You will meet tricksters here like Rabbit (ancestor of Brer Rabbit and Tio Conejo), along with Tortoise, Spider, and more. There are \u201cpourquoi<\/a>\u201d stories about why Bat flies at night and why Lemur\u2019s eyes are big. There are also stories of magical transformations, like the woman who became a lion. Read it again. Read it aloud. Let it sink in. Maybe even write your own version of the story, using your imagination to add more details. 1. Anansi the Spider and His Children<\/h3>\n

It was a feast-day, and all the town\u2019s cooks were cooking.
\nAnansi wanted to eat everything, but which food would be ready first?
\nAnansi summoned his children and gave each one a rope, tying the ropes around his waist. \u201cGo watch!\u201d he told them. \u201cWhen the
\nfood\u2019s ready, tug on the rope and pull me there.\u201d
\nAnansi waited.
\nPepper-soup: ready!
\nPumpkin-stew: ready!
\nFry-fry, foo-foo, binch-beans: all ready!
\nAnansi\u2019s children were all pulling at once: this way, that way!
\nPulled in every direction, Anansi didn\u2019t get to eat anything, and his waist is still narrow from being squeezed by those ropes.<\/p>\n

2. Anansi the Spider and the Singing Ghosts<\/h3>\n

One night Anansi went to the river alone.
\nHe heard singing. The ghosts were singing!
\nDead men scooping water in skulls, scoop-scoop-scoop\u2026
\nAnansi wanted to sing with the ghosts.
\n\u201cNo!\u201d they told him. \u201cYour head will explode.\u201d
\nAnansi couldn\u2019t resist; he started singing.
\nHis head exploded, and the ghosts repaired it.
\n\u201cWe won\u2019t be there to help you next time,\u201d they warned him.
\nBut Anansi couldn\u2019t stop himself. The next day he started singing that song: Scoop-scoop-scoop\u2026
\nHis head exploded.
\n\u201cHelp, ghosts!\u201d he shouted.
\nIt was daytime; the ghosts didn\u2019t hear him.
