School Day #1: Getting the Family Together<\/span><\/h4>\n

Call your family together. Tell them you have something you <\/span>wish to talk with them about. Have everyone seated in a <\/span>quiet room \u2014 no television or radio. Then say the following: <\/span>(Don\u2019t read this to them. Put it in your own words.) <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have something to say to you that is very important. A <\/span>mother wants to do her best for her children. I know that <\/span>doing my best means seeing that you do your best in school. <\/span>I want to do a better job of helping you do your best in <\/span>school. I want you to follow a plan that has worked for many <\/span>other families. To start, each student will bring schoolwork <\/span>home tomorrow, and we will meet at the kitchen <\/span>table at 7:00 [pick a time when everyone is home]. <\/span>We will be following this plan because we care about <\/span>each other, and because learning is important to our <\/span>family. Remember, every student will bring schoolwork <\/span>home tomorrow, and we will meet at the kitchen table <\/span>at 7:00.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

That is all you have to say. If there are two parents in the <\/span>home, they should present this to the children together. <\/span>There is no need for discussion at this point. Allow the <\/span>children to be curious. Just be sure that they know to bring <\/span>schoolwork home and to meet at the kitchen table at the <\/span>time you decided upon.<\/span><\/p>\n

School Day #2: Study Place<\/h4>\n

Remind the children in the morning to bring their school-<\/span>work or books home that night. Remind them to meet at <\/span>the kitchen table at the time you decided upon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the study time, prepare the kitchen table to be a <\/span>Study Place. <\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Be sure there is enough room and enough chairs for <\/span>everyone. Maybe you will have to use a card table in <\/span>addition to the kitchen table. Every student should have <\/span>a place to sit and a surface to write on. <\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Put dictionary, paper, pencils, pens, and a pencil <\/span>sharpener in the middle of the kitchen table. <\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The room must be quiet \u2014 no television, radio, or other <\/span>disturbances. <\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Have a small, healthful snack and\/or drink ready to <\/span>serve the children later. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    When it is time to begin, ask each child to sit in a chair <\/span>and begin to study. Tell them that you will speak with them <\/span>in just a few minutes. If a child says he has no homework, <\/span>tell the child to read a book or do a few extra arithmetic <\/span>problems. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Say something like this:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    \u201cIt makes me very proud to see my children studying and <\/span>learning. We have created a special Study Place<\/a> in our <\/span>home. Please continue to work quietly. When you have <\/span>finished your work, you may leave. We will meet here again <\/span>tomorrow at 7:00 [pick a time when everyone is home].\u201d <\/span>Serve the snack. Let each child leave when he or she <\/span>wishes. Keep the children as quiet as possible. Smile at <\/span>them and let them know you are proud.<\/span><\/p>\n

    School Day #3: Study Time<\/h4>\n

    Prepare your Study Place at the kitchen table<\/a> as you did <\/span>the day before. When the children begin studying, tell them <\/span>you will talk with them in a few minutes. Let them study <\/span>quietly for about 10 minutes, then say something like this:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cWe now have a family Study Place. I am very happy to <\/span>see my children studying and learning. But I know you <\/span>are wondering how much time you should spend with your <\/span>studies. You are also wondering if you must always study at <\/span>the same time. I have some answers for you.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cOur family rule<\/a> will be that each student will study 10 <\/span>minutes per grade level per day, five days per week. We <\/span>will not study on Friday or Saturday evening unless there is <\/span>extra schoolwork that must be done. Ten minutes per grade <\/span>level per day means that if you are in the second grade, you <\/span>study 20 minutes each day. If you are in the sixth grade, <\/span>you study 60 minutes each day. If you are in the ninth <\/span>grade, you study 90 minutes each day.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cYou may study more than this amount, but you may not <\/span>study less than this amount. If your assignments are com<\/span>pleted, you may spend the remaining time reading or orga<\/span>nizing your notebooks or working extra problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cIf you have an activity and cannot be home at the Study <\/span>Time, you may study at another time. But I want to know <\/span>when that time will be. So tell me. Plan ahead so that you <\/span>complete your Study Time each day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    Serve the snack. Let the children finish their Study Time. <\/span>Check on them occasionally\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    School Day #4: Checking and Praising<\/h4>\n

    Your family now has a special Study Place, and your <\/span>children know the amount of time you expect them to <\/span>spend with their studies each day, five days per week. Now <\/span>it is your job to see that the children meet your expectations. <\/span>You must check on them. In a friendly but firm manner, you <\/span>must see that each child continues to bring home school- <\/span>work or books every day. You must see that the kitchen <\/span>table is available as a Study Place. You must see that the <\/span>minimum amount of Study Time is observed. Then give <\/span>your children plenty of praise for good study habits and for <\/span>positive attitudes.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Check:<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Is each child studying 10 minutes per grade level <\/span>per day?<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Is the kitchen a quiet place to study?<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Are your children bringing books and schoolwork home?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Your children should not think of Study Time as punishment. <\/span>You can make it a happy time. Prepare a snack occasion<\/span>ally. Be interested in their work without disturbing them too <\/span>much. CHECK on them. PRAISE them.<\/span><\/p>\n

      School Day #5: Listening<\/h4>\n

      By now, your children should understand that you expect <\/span>them to spend time each day studying in a quiet place. <\/span>You must keep checking on them so that the habit of daily <\/span>study is established.<\/span><\/p>\n

      You must also listen to your children<\/a>. Show an interest in <\/span>them. Each day, find at least one minute alone with each <\/span>child. Sit down with the child. Ask him or her to tell you <\/span>about his or her day. Then listen. Ask questions, but mostly <\/span>listen. Don\u2019t let the child say, \u201cNothing happened today,\u201d <\/span>and leave. Keep the conversation going with each child for <\/span>at least a minute.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Miss Henry\u2019s Five Rules<\/span><\/h4>\n

      Study Place:<\/span> 1. Every child should have a quiet place to study in <\/span>the home.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Study Time:<\/span> 2. Every child should spend at least 10 minutes per <\/span>grade level per day studying at home. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Check:<\/span> 3. Parents must check to see that Study Time is <\/span>observed.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Listen:<\/span> 4. Parents should listen to each child each day.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Praise:<\/span> 5. Parents should praise children for studying and for <\/span>having positive attitudes about school.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
