Can new therapies based on video games fix his lazy eye and give him his first glimpse of life in 3D?<\/h4>\n<aside class=\"article__aside\">\n<div class=\"article__aside__section article__share-buttons\" role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"share-buttons\" role=\"group\">\n<p>m on the back seat of the lower deck of a number 37 bus, outside the red-brick and Portland stone clock tower of Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton, south London. Although I know exactly where I am, I feel lost. I no longer know whether to trust what my eyes are telling me. I\u2019ve just been told by a leading vision scientist that I have no real depth perception. In other words, I have never seen in three dimensions the way most people do.<\/p>\n<p>The lazy eye I\u2019ve had since early childhood means that my brain largely ignores the signals from my right eye, leaving my world flatter than most people\u2019s. Now I\u2019m wondering what the clock tower looks like to my fellow passengers. What can the woman two seats in front see in the son she has on her lap that I can\u2019t see in mine? Which parts of mountain streams, sea birds and other natural sights am I missing out on? And does this explain why my strike rate on the football pitch is so dismal?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d met up with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mvr.mcgill.ca\/Robert\/site\/home.html\">Robert Hess<\/a> from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, during a trip to London to find out about his research using video games to treat lazy eye. Pilot trials suggest the approach could help adults with the condition \u2013 an improvement on established treatments, which are mostly considered to be effective only up to the age of about seven. Even more remarkably, some of the participants in Hess\u2019s and related research have provided extraordinary accounts of what it\u2019s like to begin seeing in three dimensions for the first time..<\/p>\n<p>Hess\u2019s group is one of at least five working on the use of video games to treat lazy eye. It\u2019s hoped that the work could soon offer affected children a less onerous form of treatment, as well as potentially reducing the risk of blindness or severe vision loss for adults with the condition.<\/p>\n<p>But more than this, the knowledge generated by this research is helping scientists understand that the human brain is more open to being rewired in later life than was previously believed. The tantalising prospect is of interventions that would make it easier to reverse problems with cognition caused by things like stroke and brain injuries. As the bus pulls away from the stop, I start to wonder if video gaming could fix my lazy eye and give me my first taste of true 3D vision.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Modern ideas about lazy eyes and brain plasticity are rooted in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/centennial.rucares.org\/index.php?page=Neural_Basis_Visual_Perception\">work of neurophysiologists David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel<\/a>, who, in 1981, got a Nobel Prize for their work on the basics of how our brains process visual information.<\/li>\n<li>During the mid-1990s,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/93\/13\/6830.full.pdf\">Dennis Levi found<\/a>\u00a0that adults with lazy eye could regain a certain form of acuity, or clarity of vision, by repeated practice of specific visual exercises \u2013 an approach known as perceptual learning.<\/li>\n<li>A team at the University of Nottingham described their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/~mczibit\/development.html\">2003 prototype video-game lazy eye treatment<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a wooden tea chest with a hole that allowed patients to see two separate screens \u2013 as \u201cvirtual reality\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>In 2013 Robert Hess published\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0960982213000948\">a pilot study<\/a>\u00a0in which 18 adults with lazy eye who played a special version of the classic puzzle game\u00a0<em>Tetris<\/em>\u00a0improved their weak eyes by an average of about two lines on an optician\u2019s test chart.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/srep\/2015\/150226\/srep08482\/full\/srep08482.html\">recent\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>\u00a0paper\u00a0<\/a>by Dennis Levi and Daphne Bavelier suggests it may be simplistic to think that lazy eye can be fixed simply by preventing the suppression of signals from the weaker eye.<\/li>\n<li>In this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XCCtphdXhq8\">TEDx video<\/a>, neuroscientist Susan Barry explains how she straightened her eyes and began to see in 3D at the age of 48 using vision therapy.<\/li>\n<li>This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?t=20&amp;v=Ek1ZbGeYLbI\">video<\/a>\u00a0gives a taste of what James Blaha\u2019s virtual reality gaming system for lazy eye looks like.<\/li>\n<li>This\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/0002939457917956\">research paper from 1957<\/a>, which reports how US scientist Carl Kupfer improved the vision of young adults with lazy eye, shows that evidence of brain plasticity that contradicts modern medical practice goes back a long way.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=71RML96XxCI\">video<\/a>\u00a0showing how\u00a0<em>Lazy Eye Shooter<\/em>, an early version of Dennis Levi and Daphne Bavelier\u2019s video game approach to treating lazy eye, works.<\/li>\n<li>Major video game company Ubisoft\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2015\/03\/03\/ubisofts-therapeutic-video-game-dig-ru...\">announced in March<\/a>\u00a0that it had completed development of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q6vsyMFH5js\">Dig Rush<\/a><\/em>, a game designed to treat lazy eye based on the research of vision scientist Robert Hess.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 750px; border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/online.visual-paradigm.com\/share\/book\/can-gaming-help-me-see-in-3d-zb50t9xcg?enforceShowPromotionBar=true\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":7574,"template":"","meta":{"_yoast_wpseo_title":"","_yoast_wpseo_metadesc":"You can share the best ideas and insights with flipbooks like this one just few clicks your can share on social media.
