x86<\/b>\u00a0(also known as\u00a080×86 <\/b>or the\u00a08086 family<\/b>) is a family of\u00a0complex instruction set computer<\/a>\u00a0(CISC)\u00a0instruction set architectures<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0initially developed by\u00a0Intel\u00a0based on the\u00a0Intel 8086<\/a>\u00a0microprocessor\u00a0and its\u00a08088\u00a0variant. The 8086 was introduced in 1978 as a fully\u00a016-bit<\/a>\u00a0extension of Intel’s\u00a08-bit<\/a>\u00a08080<\/a>\u00a0microprocessor, with\u00a0memory segmentation\u00a0as a solution for addressing more memory than can be covered by a plain 16-bit address. The term “x86” came into being because the names of several successors to Intel’s 8086 processor end in “86”, including the\u00a080186,\u00a080286,\u00a080386,\u00a0and\u00a080486\u00a0processors.<\/p>\n

The term is not synonymous with\u00a0IBM PC compatibility, as this implies a multitude of other\u00a0computer hardware.\u00a0Embedded systems\u00a0and general-purpose computers used x86 chips\u00a0before the PC-compatible market started, some of them before the\u00a0IBM PC\u00a0(1981) debut.<\/p>\n

As of June\u00a02022, most\u00a0desktop\u00a0and\u00a0laptop\u00a0computers sold are based on the x86 architecture family,<\/sup>\u00a0while mobile categories such as\u00a0smartphones\u00a0or\u00a0tablets\u00a0are dominated by\u00a0ARM<\/a>. At the high end, x86 continues to dominate computation-intensive\u00a0workstation\u00a0and\u00a0cloud computing\u00a0segments. The fastest supercomputer in the\u00a0TOP500\u00a0list for June 2022 was the first exascale system,\u00a0Frontier, built using\u00a0AMD Epyc<\/a>\u00a0CPUs based on the x86 ISA; it broke the 1\u00a0exaflop\u00a0barrier in May 2022.<\/p>\n
