{"id":12770,"date":"2022-07-08T02:40:51","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T02:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.booksofall.com\/pl\/?post_type=product&#038;p=12770"},"modified":"2022-07-08T02:52:19","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T02:52:19","slug":"eating-well-vegan-infants-and-under-5s","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.booksofall.com\/pl\/eating-well-vegan-infants-and-under-5s\/","title":{"rendered":"Eating well: vegan infants and under-5s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">T<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">his resource shows the sorts of foods, and amounts of foods, that can help <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">meet the nutritional needs of vegan infants and children aged from <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">6 months up to 5 years in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Why have we produced this <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">resource? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This visual resource illustrates how the dietary needs <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of vegan infants (from 6 months to 1 year) and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">children aged 1-4 years can be met, alongside <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">following appropriate advice about supplementation. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Infants and young children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livestrong.com\/article\/556818-what-can-i-feed-my-children-to-increase-their-growth\/\">need enough energy <\/a><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(calories) to grow and be active, and enough <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nutrients (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrens.com\/health-wellness\/best-sources-of-protein-for-kids#:~:text=Kids%20usually%20need%20about%203,butter%20is%205%20grams%20protein.\">protein<\/a>, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">minerals) to ensure that they remain healthy, fight <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">infections, can be active and learn effectively. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Experts have calculated the amount of energy and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the amounts of individual nutrients that they think <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">infants and young children in different age groups <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">need. These are known as \u2018dietary reference <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">values\u2019. This resource gives information on how <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">these dietary reference values for infants and 1-4<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">year olds can be met in practice, and the sorts of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">foods and amounts of food that vegan children <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">could be offered in early years and other settings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Can a vegan diet meet the nutritional <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">needs of infants and children?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In developed countries like the UK where food <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is plentiful and there is a wide range of options <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">available to ensure a complete diet, it is perfectly <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">possible for infants and children to get all the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nutrition they need from a vegetable-based <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">diet alongside appropriate supplements, but it <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">does take thought and planning. Some essential <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nutrients are provided primarily by animal foods <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in typical UK diets and therefore vegans must <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">make sure they have adequate amounts of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">some unique foods that supply these nutrients, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">or choose fortified foods or supplements. We <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">provide information on this in this resource. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Whilst we do not have a clear statement in the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">UK about vegan diets for infants and children, the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">NHS suggests:<br \/>\n<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cIf you\u2019re bringing up your baby or child on <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a vegan diet, you need to ensure they get a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">wide variety of foods to provide the energy <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and vitamins they need for growth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Other countries have provided more clarity. For <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">example, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and American Academy of Pediatrics have a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">statement that:<br \/>\n<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cWell-planned vegetarian and vegan eating <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">patterns are healthy for infants and toddlers.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Vegan diets can be safely given to infants and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">children providing that care is taken that all<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nutritional needs are met. Parents and careers will <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">benefit from advice from a health professional <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and should be particularly encouraged to seek <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">guidance if using specialist vegan supplements <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of vitamin drops, to ensure the dosage is correct. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Advice is also available from The Vegan Society <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(see page 128). Information on how to access <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">additional support can be found in the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Resources <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">section on page 128.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Children who avoid dairy foods or eggs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Some children may need a dairy-free diet or a diet that avoids eggs, because of an allergy to a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">specific animal protein, or because they are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/lactose-intolerance\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20374232#:~:text=People%20with%20lactose%20intolerance%20are,its%20symptoms%20can%20be%20uncomfortable.\"> lactose intolerance<\/a>. All the recipes in this book are <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">particularly suitable for infants and children on dairy-free and egg-free diets and of course, for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">vegetarian children or those who might avoid some foods or ingredients for religious or cultural <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">reasons. Providing vegan food for groups of children when some are on special diets enables similar <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">meals to be enjoyed by all the children together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">How do we define \u2018vegan\u2019?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">A vegan is usually defined as someone who eats only a plant-based diet. Vegans generally eat no <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">meat, fish or other substances that come directly from killing an animal or from agricultural <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">practices which lead to unnecessary death or suffering of any animal. Vegans do not eat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myplate.gov\/eat-healthy\/dairy#:~:text=What%20foods%20are%20included%20in,cream%2C%20cream%2C%20and%20butter.\">dairy <\/a><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myplate.gov\/eat-healthy\/dairy#:~:text=What%20foods%20are%20included%20in,cream%2C%20cream%2C%20and%20butter.\">products<\/a> such as cows\u2019 (or other animal) milk or milk products such as cheese and yoghurt, eggs or <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">foods containing eggs, honey, any foods which contain gelatin or animal fats, or products fortified <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with vitamins that have come from an animal source (for example, vitamin D which is added to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">some foods and drinks, and which usually comes from sheep wool lanolin). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Some people may be vegan for ethical or environmental reasons and some may choose a vegan <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">diet for health reasons. Some people may also be vegan for reasons associated with culture or religion, and may have other foods they also avoid. For example, some <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rastafari\">Rastafarians<\/a> are vegan and may also avoid some processed foods and canned foods. People who choose a vegan diet may have different foods and drinks they accept or avoid, so it is important always to ask families what they do and don\u2019t choose to eat.
