{"id":12765,"date":"2022-07-08T02:18:23","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T02:18:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.booksofall.com\/pl\/?post_type=product&#038;p=12765"},"modified":"2022-07-08T03:10:22","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T03:10:22","slug":"eating-well-packed-lunches-for-1-4-year-olds","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.booksofall.com\/pl\/eating-well-packed-lunches-for-1-4-year-olds\/","title":{"rendered":"Eating Well: Packed Lunches For 1-4 Year Olds"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Why do we need ideas for packed <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">lunches?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Y<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">oung children may take a packed lunch to their early years setting when <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">they go for a half-day or full-day session, or may have them for school trips <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and outings. Increasingly, younger children who are offered free sessions in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">early years settings are required to bring in packed lunches. Families new to early <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">years settings may need extra support to provide healthy packed lunches for their <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">A packed lunch should provide the same <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">amount of energy and nutrients as a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">main meal for children of these ages, and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">should follow the key principles of eating <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">well for this age group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Healthy eating and physical activity <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">are essential for proper growth and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">development in childhood. To help <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">children develop patterns of healthy <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">eating from an early age, it is important<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">that the food and eating patterns to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">which children are exposed \u2013 both at <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">home and outside the home \u2013 are those <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">that promote positive attitudes and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">enjoyment of good food<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Key principles of eating well for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">1-4 year olds<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">A good variety of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">different foods<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">important to ensure all the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">important nutrients (vitamins and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">minerals) are included in the diet. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Make sure the content of packed <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">lunches is varied from day to day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Choose good-quality food.<\/strong> <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Young children need to eat small <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">quantities of good food regularly. The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">best foods are those that are minimally <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">processed and which have been made <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from good-quality ingredients. Avoid <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">foods that are \u2018diluted\u2019 \u2013 for example, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">processed meat or fish covered with <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">breadcrumbs, batter or other coatings <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(such as sausage rolls, Scotch eggs,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">chicken nuggets or fish cakes) which <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">make them lower in nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Young children <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">should eat child-sized <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">portions of at least <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">five different fruit and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">vegetables a day.<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Where <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">children are reluctant to eat these <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">foods, they should at least taste <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">five different ones every day <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and have them served with their <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">meals and snacks so they become <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">familiar with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Good sources of iron and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">zinc<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">should be served at main <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>meals.<\/strong> This includes meat, fish, eggs, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ground nuts and seeds, and soya <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">products such as tofu. See page 50 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for examples of foods that are high in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">iron and zinc<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Limit sugar intake.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5640428\/sugar-kids-vs-adults\/\">Children do not need sugary foods<\/a> such as sweets, biscuits, cakes chocolate, soft drinks or sugar for energy. Sugary foods can damage teeth and provide calories but few nutrients. Starchy foods \u2013 such as potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and yam \u2013 are better sources of energy, as they contain other important nutrients too. Use fruit to sweeten yoghurts and desserts.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">A good source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/248958#:~:text=Calcium%20is%20a%20nutrient%20that,in%20the%20bones%20and%20teeth.\">calcium<\/a>, riboflavin and iodine<\/span><\/strong> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">should be <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">served every day. Whole or semi-skimmed cows\u2019 milk, cheeses, and unsweetened <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">yoghurt and fromage frais are good sources of these nutrients. For children <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">who do not have dairy products, an unsweetened fortified milk substitute such <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as soya milk or unsweetened fortified soya yoghurt can provide these nutrients. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">For details of other dairy substitutes for children, see pages 27 and 35. For more <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">examples of foods rich in these nutrients, see page 49.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Make sure food for 1-4 <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>year olds is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actiononsalt.org.uk\/salthealth\/children\/\">low in salt<\/a><\/strong>. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Avoid foods designed for adults, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">take-aways and foods that are <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">high in salt such as processed <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">meat, salty snacks and biscuits, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sauces and ready-prepared meals<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Children can drink water.<\/strong> <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Children should be encouraged to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">drink tap water if they are thirsty, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and fresh drinking water should be <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">available at all times. Water quenches <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">thirst, does not spoil the appetite, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and does not damage teeth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">What to avoid?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Children aged 1-4 years should not be given foods or drinks <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">containing artificial sweeteners (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saccharin\">saccharin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aspartame\">aspartame<\/a>), <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the preservative E211 or the artificial colours E102, E104, E110, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">E122, E124 or E129. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Children should not be given tea, coffee, cola, energy drinks or <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">other drinks that contain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacap.org\/AACAP\/Families_and_Youth\/Facts_for_Families\/FFF-Guide\/Caffeine_and_Children-131.aspx#:~:text=At%20this%20time%2C%20pediatricians%20advise,those%2012%2D18%20years%20old.\">caffeine<\/a> as these disrupt children\u2019s sleep. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Tea and coffee are also not suitable drinks for under-5s as they <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">contain tannic acid, which interferes with iron absorption. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Children over 1 year of age do not need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/fortified-milk#basics\">fortified milks<\/a> such as <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">toddler milks or growing-up milks. These are sweeter than animal <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">milks.
