Evidence suggests that <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the root of many diseases of adulthood lies in the nutrient supply from conception to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">birth and through the first two crucial years. Everyone who has contact with women in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">pregnancy should be able to offer clear, consistent, evidence-based and practical advice <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on what a good diet looks like. Supporting women to take their food choices seriously, to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">spend their money wisely on food and to learn skills in food preparation has to be a priority <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">if we are to reverse current trends in poor nutritional health and tackle health inequalities<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The nutritional status of a woman before she <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">conceives and throughout her pregnancy will impact <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on the health and wellbeing of her infant in both the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">short term and long term. The aim of all health <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">advice in pregnancy is to ensure the best outcome for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mother and infant, and that includes having a baby <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">born at a good birthweight, with adequate nutrient <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">stores. Poor diet in pregnancy has been associated <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with adverse pregnancy outcomes in a number of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">studies, and there is evidence that the diets of many <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">women are lacking in some of the essential nutrients <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">associated with good outcomes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Despite a popular myth that a baby will take what it <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">needs nutritionally from its mother, neither mother <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nor baby will thrive if the mother\u2019s diet is poor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Talking with women and their partners and supporters about <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">eating well in pregnancy and beyond<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Motivating someone to change their behaviour is a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">skill and if you have not already attended a course on <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">how to support behaviour change, you may find it <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">useful to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">There can be many ways that conversations about <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">food choice in pregnancy may arise and a lot of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">different questions that women and their partners <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and supporters may ask about what they can and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">can\u2019t eat. Hopefully you will find answers to many of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">these in this resource. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">It is highly likely that many women and those they <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">live with do not currently eat a diet that is in line with <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">recommendations for a healthy diet. Many will choose <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">fast foods, high-fat, high-salt and high-sugar snacks <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and too many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartandstroke.ca\/articles\/what-is-ultra-processed-food\">ultra-processed foods<\/a>, and may <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">have limited cooking skills. Some women may also <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">have limited space to store food or cook food. It is <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">important to be sensitive to this, and use this resource <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in a way that best supports each individual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The aim of this resource is to show best practice. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Some women may only be able to make a small <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">number of changes to their diet and it is the role <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of those offering support to encourage whatever <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">positive changes it might be possible for each person <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to make. This resource deliberately does not include <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">images of many of the commercially produced and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ultra-processed foods that people may choose, as the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">aim is to offer an alternative view of what is possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Talking about eating well in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">pregnancy and beyond<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Be<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">low are some ideas you might want to share in discussions about the importance <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of a good diet in pregnancy, the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/start4life\/baby\/feeding-your-baby\/breastfeeding\/\">breastfeeding<\/a> and the need for a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">good diet in the early years of a child\u2019s life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The baby will be nourishing itself all day from the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mother\u2019s stores via the placenta, and it is therefore very <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">important that mum also eats good food regularly so that <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">she has the energy and nutrients to provide for her baby <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as well as for her own needs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Babies who are malnourished in the womb because <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mum isn\u2019t eating enough during pregnancy are <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">more likely to face lifelong chronic health problems, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and have a higher risk of dying in infancy. This <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">happens in countries like the UK as well as in poorer <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">countries around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Exclusively breastfeeding a baby for the first <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">six months, alongside solids in the second six <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">months, and continued breastfeeding for as <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">long after that as mum wishes, protects both <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the baby\u2019s and the mother\u2019s health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Everyone wants the best for their baby. Spending money <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on the whole family eating well makes more sense than <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">spending money on expensive clothes and equipment for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a new baby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">If mums think they might have more children, eating the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">same sorts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babycenter.com\/baby\/solids-finger-foods\/the-10-best-foods-for-babies_10320505\">healthy foods<\/a> that they give their babies <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and toddlers will ensure they are able to give the next <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">baby a really good start in life from the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Eating together with others is an important part of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">family life, and getting children used to this when young <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">will encourage them to eat better, and it sets a good <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">example for them when they have families of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">You can start to eat better and support children <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to eat better at any time. It\u2019s never too late to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">change habits, and good health is the best gift <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">you can give your children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">For children under the age of 2 years, having a poor diet <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">weakens a child\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionforkids.com.au\/blog\/immune-support-kids#:~:text=To%20build%20a%20robust%20immune,a%20weakened%20defence%20against%20infections.\"> immune system<\/a> and makes him or <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">her more susceptible to common illnesses such as chest <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">infections and diarrhoea, and may prevent the child from <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">being as physically strong and mentally able as he or she <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">could be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">You can\u2019t see if someone is poorly nourished, but <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">it can impact on health and wellbeing for life.
