JavaScript, often abbreviated as\u00a0JS, is a\u00a0programming language<\/a>\u00a0that is one of the core technologies of the\u00a0World Wide Web<\/a>, alongside\u00a0HTML<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0CSS<\/a>. As of 2022, 98% of\u00a0websites<\/a>\u00a0use JavaScript on the\u00a0client<\/a>\u00a0side for\u00a0webpage<\/a>\u00a0behavior, often incorporating third-party\u00a0libraries<\/a>. All major\u00a0web browsers<\/a>\u00a0have a dedicated\u00a0JavaScript engine<\/a>\u00a0to execute the\u00a0code<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0users<\/a>‘ devices.<\/p>\n

JavaScript is a high-level, often just-in-time compiled language that conforms to the ECMAScript standard. It has dynamic typing, prototype-based object-orientation, and first-class functions. It is multi-paradigm, supporting event-driven, functional, and imperative programming styles. It has application programming interfaces (APIs) for working with text, dates, regular expressions, standard data structures, and the Document Object Model (DOM).<\/p>\n

The ECMAScript standard does not include any input\/output (I\/O), such as networking, storage, or graphics facilities. In practice, the web browser or other runtime system provides JavaScript APIs for I\/O.<\/p>\n

JavaScript engines were originally used only in web browsers, but are now core components of some servers and a variety of applications. The most popular runtime system for this usage is Node.js.<\/p>\n
