Briefly, it is the study of the integers and questions arising from them.<\/p>\n<p><b>Definition 1.0.1 The Integers.\u00a0<\/b>The set of\u00a0<b><a href=\"https:\/\/byjus.com\/maths\/counting-numbers\/\">counting numbers<\/a>\u00a0<\/b>is denoted<\/p>\n<p>N =\u00a0<i>{<\/i>0<i>,\u00a0<\/i>1<i>,\u00a0<\/i>2<i>,\u00a0<\/i>3<i>,\u00a0<\/i>4<i>, \u00b7 \u00b7 \u00b7 }<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Note that in this text, this set begins at zero1. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuemath.com\/numbers\/integers\/\"><b>integers\u00a0<\/b><\/a>is the set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsyouneed.com\/num\/positive-negative.html\">positive\u00a0<i>and\u00a0<\/i>negative counting numbers<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Z =\u00a0<i>{\u00b7 \u00b7 \u00b7 ,\u2212<\/i>3<i>,\u2212<\/i>2<i>,\u2212<\/i>1<i>,\u00a0<\/i>0<i>,\u00a0<\/i>1<i>,\u00a0<\/i>2<i>,\u00a0<\/i>3<i>, \u00b7 \u00b7 \u00b7 }<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a fairly dry definition, though. The best way to find out what this definition means is to try to answer some questions\u00a0<i>about\u00a0<\/i>integers!<\/p>\n<p><b>1.1 A First Problem<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start! Suppose you have lots of left-over postage stamps2 that are of just a few different denominations. It could be fun to see what amounts you could make from them.<\/p>\n<p>To be concrete, let\u2019s assume first that all your stamps are numbered 2<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cent_(currency)\">\u00a2<\/a> and 3\u00a2. Here are two questions we could ask. They are mathematically equivalent, but might take your exploration in two very different directions!<\/p>\n<p><b>Question 1.1.1\u00a0<\/b>Suppose you only have stamps (or some other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationsonline.org\/oneworld\/currencies.htm\">currency<\/a>-like item) available in 2\u00a2 and 3\u00a2 amounts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which denominations of postage can you get by combining just these two kinds of stamps?<\/li>\n<li>Which denominations can you <i>not\u00a0<\/i>get with just these two kinds?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve thought about that, try the same problem with 2\u00a2 and 4\u00a2 stamps. What is the same, what is different?<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s get to a nontrivial case; what about with 3\u00a2 and 4\u00a2 stamps? In this case, after some experimentation, it looks like only 1, 2, and 5 are not possible, so anything six or above is possible. We call this number (in this case, 6) the\u00a0<b>conductor\u00a0<\/b>of the set\u00a0<i>{<\/i>3<i>,\u00a0<\/i>4<i>}<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>What we are really asking, as might be clear by now, is which positive integers\u00a0<i>n\u00a0<\/i>are impossible (or possible) to write in the form\u00a0<i>n\u00a0<\/i>= 3<i>x\u00a0<\/i>+ 4<i>y<\/i>, for nonnegative integers\u00a0<i>x\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<i>y<\/i>. This is also sometimes called the Frobenius3 or coin problem.<\/p>\n<p>Continue trying this with different small pairs of positive integers (see also Exercise 1.4.5\u2013Exercise 1.4.7). For each pair, pay attention to two things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the conductor of the pair?
