Actions speak louder than words. As parents, we not only nurture our children\u2019s natural feelings <\/span>of sympathy and fairness, we also teach them the behaviors of respect and responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

Helping<\/span><\/h3>\n

Helping others<\/a> begins with helping at home. Every child can have responsibilities in the <\/span>household\u2014tasks that they regularly perform as their contribution to the family\u2019s well-being. <\/span><\/p>\n

Helping outside the family helps children to widen their sense of responsibility<\/a> to the <\/span>world around them. As children learn to reach beyond themselves to help, they see <\/span>themselves being genuinely useful. They grow in self-respect<\/a> and responsibility. <\/span><\/p>\n

Brainstorm ways your family could work together on simple service projects that would be <\/span>helpful to someone outside the family. Be sure the children have input.<\/span> Ideas: <\/span><\/p>\n

Let children select from a short list of possible helping activities. This will increase interest and <\/span>cooperation. Then go do some good together! Make sure you don\u2019t accept anything in return to <\/span>have the biggest impact on learning to do good for the sake of building good character.<\/span><\/p>\n

Owning Up<\/span><\/h3>\n

Everyone makes mistakes. Mistakes are a part of life and can be forgiven. <\/span><\/p>\n

When parents make mistakes, the best lesson they can teach their children is to show them how <\/span>to admit error. A simple statement such as \u201cI should not have done that\u201d followed by an apology <\/span>is all that is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n

If parents show children they can face up to their mistakes and take responsibility for their <\/span>actions, but still respect themselves, children are likely to do so as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Children can learn to \u201cown up\u201d by being taught the language of admitting error <\/span>when they make mistakes. At these critical moments, it\u2019s easy for parents to react<\/span>
and yell instead of merely asking the child to say, \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have done that, <\/span>and I\u2019m sorry.\u201d Calmly teaching the child the right words helps show the way.<\/span><\/p>\n

Honesty comes gently to a child who learns that mistakes can be taken in stride, and even <\/span>learned from, when they are admitted. <\/span><\/p>\n

Role playing may help kids to practice so they (and we as parents) are more ready to <\/span>react in a helpful way when mistakes happen in everyday life. You could also notice how <\/span>characters respond in a book or movie when they make mistakes and discussing it as a family.<\/span><\/p>\n

Manners<\/span><\/h3>\n

Manners are one way we show respect for other people. One way to brush up on manners is to <\/span>teach and practice manners through role-playing games.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meeting People<\/span><\/h3>\n

Unless taught, children and adolescents can feel awkward when meeting someone for the first <\/span>time. Teaching them the following simple steps can help them meet people with grace and <\/span>polish. The best way to teach the steps is to role play with them, taking turns playing the role <\/span>of the person initiating the introduction.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Meeting Someone New<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

  1. Look into the person\u2019s<\/span> eyes<\/span> and extend your<\/span> hand<\/span> to shake.<\/span><\/li>\n
