Bryn Nelson finds out.<\/h4>\n<aside class=\"article__aside\">\n<div class=\"article__aside__section article__share-buttons\" role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"share-buttons\" role=\"group\">\n<p>A few hours before beginning chemotherapy, a man named Chris faces his cellphone camera with a mischievous smile and describes a perfectly absurd milestone at 1.37pm on a Wednesday. \u201cThere is no more beautiful moment in a man\u2019s life\u2026\u201d he says with puckish glee. Because how can you not laugh when you\u2019ve been invited to bank your sperm in advance of being \u201cGodzilla-ed\u201d with chemotherapy and radiation, all just four days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia at the age of 43 and given a 5 to 15 per cent chance of survival?<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and the fertility clinic forgot to send someone over with a specimen kit and they\u2019re closing in little more than 20 minutes so you have to fire up your iPad for some quick visual stimulation to help you fill a sterile tube. Just try to ignore the legal consent paperwork all around you and the catheter that\u2019s been surgically inserted into your jugular vein.<\/p>\n<p>And because there are no couriers available, your sister \u2013 who has been running half-marathons to get in shape \u2013 gamely volunteers to tuck the freshly filled tube in her sports bra to keep it at body temperature before dashing the mile to the clinic. You imagine her arriving as the window is closing, lurching towards the counter and shouting \u201c<em>Nooooo!<\/em>\u201d in the slow-mo way they do in action movies. She hands over her precious cargo in the nick of time and triumphantly exclaims, \u201cThis is my brother\u2019s!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing is normal about leukaemia or its aftermath, and Chris Lihosit has chosen to cope by learning everything he can about the disease and poking fun at its many indignities and absurdities. While some people with cancer are reluctant to share because they see it as a sign of weakness, he knows that humour and openness have a way of breaking the ice and maintaining visibility.<\/p>\n<p>On the last day of 2015, Chris received one of the estimated 40,000 umbilical cord blood transplants performed around the world to date. Cord blood contains what are known as stem cells and progenitor cells, which can give rise to oxygen-carrying red blood cells, infection-fighting white blood cells and clot-forming platelets.<\/p>\n<p>Transplanted cord blood can be used to treat or cure more than 80 conditions, from leukaemia to sickle-cell disease. Based on current research exploring autism, brain injury, cerebral palsy, type 1 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, among others, the list of potential applications is likely to grow. Emerging strategies are even transforming cord blood left over after birth into a potent potion that might provide lifesaving treatments for victims of a nuclear disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Stem and progenitor cells are also found in the spongy marrow within some bones and in the blood that circulates around our bodies. But cord blood, once dismissed as medical waste, is particularly rich in these cells. As researchers are discovering, it may carry other significant advantages too.<\/p>\n<p>While a cord blood transplant might save your life, though, going through the process and then starting anew \u2013 your survival down to an anonymous baby \u2013 is far from easy.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22033191\">This review\u00a0<\/a>offers a fascinating look at the discovery and early history of leukaemia.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1056\/NEJM200106143442402\">highly cited 2001 study<\/a>\u00a0was among the first to examine the fate of adult recipients of transplants from unrelated umbilical cord blood donors.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1056\/NEJMsa1311707\">2014 study<\/a>\u00a0suggested that cord blood transplants are improving access for minority groups who have struggled to find optimal adult bone marrow donors.<\/li>\n<li>This<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1602074#t=article\">\u00a0key 2016 paper,<\/a>\u00a0by Filippo Milano, Colleen Delaney and colleagues, suggested that cord blood transplants equalled or outperformed two other transplant options in treating patients with residual leukaemia, based on overall survival and relapse rates.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1359105315576352?journalCode=hpqa\">2015 survey<\/a>\u00a0takes a sobering look at the existential challenges still facing many cancer survivors (lymphoma survivors, in this case).<\/li>\n<li>Two veterans of the Chernobyl medical response team provide<a href=\"http:\/\/thebulletin.org\/2011\/marchapril\/if-unlikely-becomes-likely-medical-response-nuclear-accidents\">\u00a0their own take\u00a0<\/a>on the nuclear disaster\u2019s lessons for future responses to radiation exposure.<\/li>\n<li>In the US, the National Marrow Donor Program\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bethematch.org\/transplant-basics\/cord-blood-and-transplants\/\">Be The Match website<\/a>\u00a0offers explanatory videos, testimonials and a comprehensive overview of umbilical cord blood and transplants.<\/li>\n<li>In the UK, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsbt.nhs.uk\/cordblood\/\">National Health Service public cord blood bank\u00a0<\/a>and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthonynolan.org\/8-ways-you-could-save-life\/donate-your-umbilical-cord-blood\">Anthony Nolan register<\/a>\u00a0both provide useful information on how and why to donate cord blood.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/parentsguidecordblood.org\/en\/milestones\">The Parent\u2019s Guide to Cord Blood Foundation i<\/a>ncludes a timeline of key milestones\u00a0and updates on clinical research.<\/li>\n<li>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fredhutch.org\/en\/labs\/clinical\/projects\/cord-blood-program.html\">\u00a0Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center\u2019s Cord Blood Program<\/a>\u00a0explains some of the science behind the utility of blood-forming stem and progenitor cells and the growing roster of clinical trials.<\/li>\n<li>For more information on the \u201cuniversal donor\u201d concept of cord-blood-derived therapies,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nohlatherapeutics.com\/\">Nohla Therapeutics<\/a>\u00a0includes several explainers on its website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 750px; border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/online.visual-paradigm.com\/share\/book\/the-life-saving-treatment-thats-being-thrown-in-the-trash-zb98ifbbw?enforceShowPromotionBar=true\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":7681,"template":"","meta":{"_yoast_wpseo_title":"","_yoast_wpseo_metadesc":"You can also create similar flipbook to promote your brand.
