PowerShell\u00a0is a task automation and\u00a0configuration management<\/a>\u00a0program from\u00a0Microsoft<\/a>, consisting of a\u00a0command-line<\/a>\u00a0shell<\/a>\u00a0and the associated\u00a0scripting language<\/a>. Initially a Windows component only, known as\u00a0Windows PowerShell, it was made\u00a0open-source<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0cross-platform<\/a>\u00a0on 18 August 2016 with the introduction of\u00a0PowerShell Core. The former is built on the\u00a0.NET Framework<\/a>, the latter on\u00a0.NET<\/a>\u00a0(previously .NET Core).<\/p>\n

In PowerShell, administrative tasks are generally performed via\u00a0cmdlets<\/i>\u00a0(pronounced\u00a0command-lets<\/i>), which are specialized .NET\u00a0classes\u00a0implementing a particular operation. These work by accessing data in different data stores, like the\u00a0file system\u00a0or\u00a0Windows Registry, which are made available to PowerShell via\u00a0providers<\/i>. Third-party developers can add cmdlets and providers to PowerShell. Cmdlets may be used by scripts, which may in turn be packaged into modules. Cmdlets work in tandem with the .NET\u00a0API.<\/p>\n

PowerShell’s support for\u00a0.NET Remoting,\u00a0WS-Management,\u00a0CIM, and\u00a0SSH\u00a0enables administrators to perform administrative tasks on both local and remote Windows systems. PowerShell also provides a hosting API with which the PowerShell runtime can be embedded inside other applications. These applications can then use PowerShell functionality to implement certain operations, including those exposed via the\u00a0graphical interface. This capability has been used by\u00a0Microsoft Exchange Server\u00a02007 to expose its management functionality as PowerShell cmdlets and providers and implement the\u00a0graphical\u00a0management tools as PowerShell hosts which invoke the necessary cmdlets. Other Microsoft applications including\u00a0Microsoft SQL Server 2008\u00a0also expose their management interface via PowerShell cmdlets.<\/sup><\/p>\n

PowerShell includes its own extensive, console-based help (similar to\u00a0man pages\u00a0in\u00a0Unix shells) accessible via the\u00a0Get-Help<\/code>\u00a0cmdlet. Updated local help contents can be retrieved from the Internet via the\u00a0Update-Help<\/code>\u00a0cmdlet. Alternatively, help from the web can be acquired on a case-by-case basis via the\u00a0-online<\/code>\u00a0switch to\u00a0Get-Help<\/code>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
