Engineering Statics<\/a> is the gateway into engineering mechanics, which is the application of Newtonian physics to design and analyze objects, systems, and structures with respect to motion, deformation, and failure. In addition to learning the subject itself, you will also develop skills in the art and practice of problem solving and mathematical modeling<\/a>, skills that will benefit you throughout your engineering career.<\/p>\n The subject is called \u201cstatics\u201d because it is concerned with particles and rigid bodies that are in equilibrium, and these will usually be stationary, i.e. static.<\/p>\n The chapters in this book are:<\/p>\n Introduction to Statics\u2014 an overview of statics and an introduction to units and problem solving.<\/p>\n Forces and Other Vectors\u2014 basic principles and mathematical operations on force and position vectors.<\/p>\n Equilibrium of Particles\u2014 an introduction to equilibrium and problem solving.<\/p>\n Moments and Static Equivalence\u2014 the rotational tendency of forces, and simplification of force systems.<\/p>\n Rigid Body Equilibrium\u2014 balance of forces and moments for single rigid bodies.<\/p>\n Equilibrium of Structures\u2014 balance of forces and moments on interconnected systems of rigid bodies.<\/p>\n Centroids and Centers of Gravity\u2014 an important geometric property of shapes and rigid bodies.<\/p>\n Internal Loadings\u2014 forces and moments within beams and other rigid bodies.<\/p>\n Friction\u2014 equilibrium of bodies subject to friction.<\/p>\n Moments of Inertia\u2014 an important property of geometric shapes used in many applications.<\/p>\n Your statics course may not cover all of these topics, or may move through them in a different order.
