They <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">like the sound of words. They invent words and are delighted with their inventions. School, of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">course, is a very verbal institution. At school, children learn to read and to write. They receive <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">verbal instructions from their teacher. They express themselves with words. Preparing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/childdevelopment\/positiveparenting\/preschoolers.html\">3- to <\/a><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/childdevelopment\/positiveparenting\/preschoolers.html\">5-year-old child<\/a> for school means preparing a child to deal with words. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Words That Are Fun<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Think of fun words from your own childhood or fun words your children have enjoyed. The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">words may have been used to describe something. They may be funny names for people in the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">family or nicknames. They may be crazy words someone made up. They may be silly words from <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a song, story, book, or movie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cFamily Fun-Word Journal.\u201d<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Keeping a family journal of fun words and their meanings <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">will provide source of good memories in the future. The journal may also include <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">favorite phrases, rhymes, and verses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cWelephant\u201d<\/span> <\/strong><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is fun for preschoolers. Take turns adding a letter sound to the beginning <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of familiar words. This is a good way to learn letter sounds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cEndings\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/em> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is a great game to play with children. Start a sentence, then ask the child to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">finish the sentence. At first, the sentence may be finished with one word. Encourage the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">child to stretch the sentence, finishing it with several words. Placing things in categories <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">means first knowing how they are alike, and knowing how other things are different. In any <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">game or play activity that uses visual discrimination (seeing differences), it is important to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">discuss with children why they think the objects are alike or different. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cAlike and Different.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/em> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">A nature walk or stroll through the neighborhood can <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">provide an opportunity to play \u201cAlike and Different.\u201d Ask your child to find two<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">flowers that are the same color or two flowers that are different shapes.
